Patti Pearcey,
Sustainable Integrated Solutions:
Building Links to Community Safety
Patti Pearcey is passionate about community safety and crime prevention. She has made significant contributions to the field since the early 1980s when she worked for the Ministry of Solicitor General-Pacific Region to develop a more community-based focus to crime reduction. She is at the forefront of a movement that recognizes the importance of establishing community based initiatives rooted in 'evidence based' prevention strategies.
Her approach reflects public opinion polls in Canada and approaches worldwide. As a pioneer in effective prevention she was instrumental in bringing two conferences to Vancouver through the 90's. She chaired Building Safer Communities: An Integrated Approach and co-chaired Towards World Change: Setting the Stage for Community Safety, an international conference for crime prevention practitioners that attracted a broad base of stakeholders from 33 countries.
As a follow-through from the conferences she formed the BC Coalition for Safer Communities ( an organization that focused on developing integrated strategies to reduce crime in BC communities) and The International Crime Prevention Action Network - a network dedicated to 'the building of global, regional and local mechanisms to aid in the reduction of violence, crime and victimization world wide'.
She has conducted research and worked with Aboriginal communities throughout BC both through the BC Coalition and as a consultant to the Native Communications Society of BC. Internationally, Patti has presented a number of papers and helped to develop initiatives in Central and South America, Australia, South Africa, England and France. Leveraging the experience gained, Pearcey now hires out her expertise through Sustainable Integrated Solutions: Building Links to Community Safety. Having already made the inroads she was awarded a contract by the Ottawa-based Institute for the Prevention of Crime to be part of the Institute's team to develop a proposed 'Integrated Strategy for Crime Prevention for British Columbia' within days of launching the consultancy.
With much attention being focused on community safety in preparation for the 2010 Olympics, Patti is in the right place at the right time!
