Monica Lee Music
Calgary born singer songwriter Monica Lee moved to Vancouver to make music. With a natural presence on stage, Monica is both easy to listen to, and impossible to ignore. Lee is a prairie girl gypsy, whose soulful and purely phrased voice is the perfect complement to her clever and inspiring songs of love, pain and redemption. Her trio, The Monica Lee Band, have a growing and varied catalogue of captivating, original songs making truly exhilarating live sets - full of lush piano, rich harmonies, solid rhythms and soaring guitars. Many songs feature Monica leading the band on viola, sometimes looping a line and then improvising on top of it to produce her own string section. Like other genre-defying artists such as Wilco and Aimee Mann, Monica Lee draws from the great melting pot of music - country, folk, blues, rock, jazz and a wee bit-o-gypsy too, fusing them together into something both classic and excitingly new.
The daughter of a classically trained mother (piano) and a Trinidadian, quatro or alto Ukulele-playing, calypso-singin' father, Monica's sphere of musical influence was as broad as it was unique. Her father's love for music and entertaining blessed the home with never-ending beats shaking the house with his rhythm foot and routinely making up songs about friends and guests. This passion for music rubbed off on his children and Monica was given the opportunity to play several instruments throughout her childhood including, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, trumpet, piano, guitar, cello, viola and anything else she could get her hands on. Adulthood arrived and Monica was still playing. To continue her musical education, Monica enrolled in the Vancouver Community College in 2000 to study jazz voice, viola and piano.
I was inspired to start my business by my peers who were following a similar path. I recognized the importance of dedicating ones whole self to the tasks at hand in order to be successful.
The Monica Lee Band has had been enjoying a 2 year residency at Vancouver 's Libra Room Thursday nights. The band consistently packs the house and in response to fan demands; they have released a live record recorded at the venue throughout 2007.
